Design Build: PNG was a volunteer based aid project for the construction of a Health Aid Post and village relocation plan for the Small Papua New Guinean Village of Labu-Tale, 30 km south of Lae, Morobe Province. An initiative by two architecture students; Kate Ferguson of Curtin University, WA and Rosemary Korowali of Unitech, Lae, saw twenty architecture students from around Australia and eight architecture students from Papua New Guinea’s Unitech volunteer for two months in the PNG jungle.
An intensive community consultation process involving all members of the Labu-Tale community developed the brief for the eventual Aid Post, new village master plan and sanitation facilities. The student architecture project was the first of its kind for PNG and involved the students working along side local villagers to design and construct a building that combined western and traditional building practices.
