Behind the Scenes: Chefs

2

INTRODUCTION

Hello, I'm Valentin Minzikovsky, a self-taught 3D animation enthusiast from Germany, a former dancer, dance teacher, and choreographer. I love 3D Animation as a way to keep on dancing.

INSPIRATION

My "Chefs" artwork was inspired by this delightful dance:

Phil and Jay from Blender Studio’s characters passed the casting as the lead actors.

ADD-ONS USED

Here are some of the add-ons I used for this project,

  • Animbox: This addon offers various tools to assist with object animation, motion design, and sculpting.
  • Rigify Animbox: This addon provides animation tools and animation presets (walk-run cycle) for Rigify human and animal metarigs.
  • Dynamic Parent: It's useful for controlling movements in the animation.
  • Bone Widget: This makes controlling character bones simpler.

Both of my addons (Animbox and Rigify Animbox) are mostly about animation, not rigging (just rudimentary rigging additions).

PROCESS

The chefs' hats were simply modeled using a torus and a cylinder and were ready to go into production. The animation process was quite simple, involving steps like blocking, modifying, refining, and playblasting. I don't use the Graph Editor very much because the Quaternion rotation system in Blender is phenomenal, and the transition from pose to pose is very predictable.

Here's an example of the workspace:

It was also very helpful to be able to display the audio waveform within Blender:

The stage scenes were deliberately kept simple.

That's all!

Below is the animation and some of the renders. Hope you like them!
